I’ve lived almost my entire life in the beautiful city of Mobile, Alabama. This historic port city has strong French, English and Spanish influences dating back to 1702. Everyone who knows much about Mobile knows that. What many people don’t know is that modern Mobile has been strongly influenced by the Irish.
And since St. Patrick’s Day is upon us, I wanted to pay tribute to one of the most important cultural events to happen in this great city. You may think that would’ve taken place in the 1700s, perhaps? The 1800s? Nope.
If you judge importance by number of youtube views, the most significant event to ever take place in Mobile, Alabama was the possible appearance of a leprechaun in a tree in the Crichton area of town in 2006.
This is the amateur sketch of said sprite.
The leprechaun was alternatively thought to be a hologram, some shadows cast from tree limbs and a “crackhead got holt of the wrong stuff” by the good people of Crichton. But the one thing everybody was sure of was that they wanted that pot of gold.

So on this 10th anniversary of the Creighton Leprechaun phenomenon, I’d like to suggest to the city of Mobile that instead of talking about our boring old French, English and Spanish heritage, the incredible antebellum houses, our gorgeous old live oaks, incredible nearby beaches, amazing attractions and the country’s original Mardi Gras (see all on my Mobile, Alabama pinterest board), we just talk about leprechauns all year long – because 24 million youtube views can’t be wrong.
