When my husband is out of town (which happens often) and I inherit all the responsibilities that come with two young kids, a dog, a house and, well, life, I pretty much always lose it by the 3rd day. I start off strong on day one. I’m running the kids around, I’m picking up the house, I’m providing homemade meals (now whether my kids will eat them or not is another story). But by day three, I’m an exhausted mess. Chances are I’ve no longer been able to find any time to cook and I’ve lost all motivation to pick up after these crazy boys so I’m feeding them whatever is around and you can barely walk through the house because of the toys and other random stuff they think belongs on the floor.
But a few weeks ago, I found a solution that made my week so much better, so much easier, I just had to tell you about it.
I ordered a week’s (M-F) worth of food from Balance. Now this information will be mostly helpful to those of you who live in and around Mobile, Alabama because that’s where they’re located. But honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them expand sooner rather than later because I’ve never seen more motivated people full of positive energy — so keep an eye on them, follow them on social media so you know when and if they expand into your area.
Anyway, the first thing that goes when my husband is out of town is MY healthy eating. Like most moms, I put my needs last so after getting everybody else fed, I usually find myself eating a few leftover gluten-free chicken nuggets over the sink and maybe a banana with peanut butter. I just don’t have the energy, when absorbing all the extra work, to make sure I’ve got good healthy food to eat when Gabe is gone. We’re not big take-out people because we like to eat healthy and also because we’re all gluten-free so picking up prepared food is usually not an option, and if we do it, we’re compromising something.
But now it is an option. An awesome one. I placed my order on the Balance website (they have options for Paleo, gluten-free grains or vegetarian plus you can choose various portion sizes depending upon how much your body needs) on Friday night. On Monday morning, I picked up my individually portioned food for Monday through Wednesday (lunches and dinners, plus a few snacks) and then on Thursday, I went back in and picked up Thursday and Friday’s meals. I also tried some of their fresh made juices, which were awesome.
Everything I had was just so delicious and composed completely of the kinds of healthy, local, organic ingredients I would’ve chosen for myself. And what surprised me was the amount of food. I was expecting it to be maybe enough for me for one meal. Instead, every single meal was more than I could finish. That led to my 4yo eating a good bit of Balance food that week as well since he appreciates all kinds of food (the oldest wouldn’t touch it but it’s just because he’s that kind of kid).
So let me assure you, if you order from Balance, you won’t feel cheated in your portions at all! I can only imagine what the “beast” portion looks like.
Anyway, so this is my new solution for whenever my husband travels. I order my meals from Balance. Then I know I’ll be well-fed, won’t fall into bad habits because of lack of time, and will have the energy to keep up with all the things I have to do.
There are tons of reasons to try it out. Maybe you’re a cross-fitter, maybe you’re a vegetarian who works long hours and doesn’t have time to cook. Maybe like me, you’re a mom who has more than she can handle on her (figurative) plate sometimes.
I suggest as a first step that you pop into the restaurant there and just have a meal. It’s conveniently located on Airport Blvd in midtown near Nouveau. You’re bound to see Liz running busily around the restaurant, buzzing with energy, excited and ready to talk to you about how food is medicine.
Or perhaps you want to order your meals and pick them up like I did. Or have your meals and/or juices delivered to one of their many delivery locations in Mobile and across the bay.
There are lots of options, including just grabbing a meal for the family on Friday night because you’re all cooked out by then and you want something yummy and healthy. They make a certain amount of extra food beyond their orders just for people like you (and me).
Go check out the Balance website, see how it all works. Place an order and try it out. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Liz at Balance provided me with 5 day’s worth of lunch and dinner Paleo meals and some juices to try out but as always, my tummy’s opinions are its own. I’m happy to say that everything was amazing and she has a new customer in me!
