Under The Bed And Dreaming

Little children seem to have boundless energy.

And the funniest thing about that, is how they go and go and go.

But when they stop, they really stop.

There’s an entire blog dedicated to the hilarious places and positions in which kids nap.

Or rather suddenly just fall out in the middle of, say, climbing the stairs.

It’s called Naps Happen.

Asher was once the guest napper, after I caught him asleep in the glider in his room with a wide variety of transportation opportunities propped all around him.

I walked in and started to laugh.

Then grabbed my camera.

But this time, when I walked into his room, I did not laugh.

Friday, after Asher, who rarely naps anymore, spent a little quality time in his room, I went up to tell him he could come out.

I opened the door, walked in and…he wasn’t there.

I called his name.

No response.

I went into his bathroom.

Nada.

I looked in his closet.

Nothing.

And I panicked.

I couldn’t see him anywhere.

He wasn’t responding when I called his name.

My heart lurched into my throat and I freaked.

I thought the kid had been Elizabeth Smarted.

Nevermind that his room is on the 2nd floor of our house.

And I was just downstairs the entire time.

And it was broad daylight.

Full on panic.

Before I dialed 911 and started screeching into the phone like a maniac, something told me to drop to my knees and look under the bed.

And there he was, right in the center, curled up into the fetal position and fast asleep.

On the hardwood floor, with his head on the rug.

And as the adrenaline started to wane, I took a deep breath.

And got my camera.

He was in such a deep sleep, I literally had to put my finger through the belt loop on the back of his shorts and pull him out.

Needless to say, I was pretty interested in exactly why he’d gone to sleep under his bed.

Kind of a weird place to sleep.

Not exactly the most comfortable choice.

His answer?

He just went under there and accidentally fell asleep.

Oh of course.

I think I’ll just crawl under here in this tight little dusty space. It’s just so relaxing lying here and looking up at all these coils through this dingy black netting.

Yawn.

And he’s out…

I can’t even fall asleep when I’m exhausted, I’m in my bed, it’s perfectly quiet and totally dark.

Ahhhh. I wanna be a kid again.

Just for a day.

Just for one good, hardy, soft-surface-optional nap.

  1. I hate to tell you sister, but this happened to me one day a month or two ago. I could not find Sam anywhhere and then I looked under his bed, and low and behold, there he was under there in all his glory by the side of the wall. The kicker….he had taken off all his clothes (which consisits of basically his underwear since that’s all he pretty much wears at home). So, naked, with underwear pulled down to his knees and passed out.

Now, anytime I can’t find him – that’s the first place I look – and believe me, it’s not often, that joker NEVER takes naps!

  2. EB had a nap mid-play today. She was postponing the inevitable but I let her hang out in her room during the designated rest time regardless. Around 3 when I went in to see if she wanted to come out, she was half on the bed, legs touching the ground, with disassembled books strewn about. Naps do, indeed, happen. I’ll keep an eye under the bed if she’s missing though!
